Pharmacist Kingsley Rickard donned his pharmacist’s coat to speak to members of Coads Green WI about the ‘Pharmacy of Yesteryear’. Mr Rickard is pictured holding the carboy, the ‘badge of the business’.

Members arrived at the meeting of the Coads Green WI to see an array of jars, bottles, pestles, mortars and products that would have been sold in a chemist shop many years ago, and within the living memory of a number of those present.

President Linda Willan welcomed guests from both Launceston and South Hill WIs, as well as the very entertaining speaker, Kingsley Rickard, from Camborne, who spoke on the subject of the ‘Pharmacy of Yesteryear’.

The speaker donned his pharmacist’s coat and talked about his training and occupation, at a time when all medicines, from ointments to suppositories, were made by hand. He discussed the importance of storage, dispensing and retail, referring to the items on display, with his talk being interspersed with humour and jokes to accompany his in depth knowledge. The audience also realised how much shopping has changed from the time who a pharmacist sold everything from hair curlers to kiss proof lipstick, from batteries to films and cameras.

The talk finished with the writing of a doctor’s prescription in abbreviated Latin, which was understood by the pharmacist but baffled the patient, who mistakenly thought that the writing was illegible.

The vote of thanks was given by Janet Ham who said that it had been a very amusing evening and praised the speaker for having such a comprehensive collection of memorabilia.

The monthly competition winners were Christine Walters in first place, with Jacky Stephens in second place and Rosemary O’Brien in third. Rosemary was the winner of the flower of the month competition, with Christine taking second place and Janet taking third. Daphne Tucker won the draw prize and Alison Gribble was presented with a birthday posie. The hostesses were the committee members, who also provided the refreshments.

The craft evenings will continue on Wednesday, September 25. The focus will be on knitting items for the homeless, following the talk from Barbara Bennett, a Street Pastor in Plymouth.

October will be a very busy month and Ian Hodgeson will be the guest at the next monthly meeting on October 9, speaking on the topic of seaweed. Both meetings will be held in the chapel parlour, starting at 7.30pm.

The Coads Green WI’s annual dinner will take place at Polhilsa, on Thursday, October 17, starting at 7pm.

Another important date for the diaries is Saturday, October 19, when, as part of a countywide initiative, the group is hosting a cream tea in the chapel parlour, between 2pm and 5pm, in aid of the Cornwall Air Ambulance, who will be sending a representative. This event is open to the general public and there will be a charge of £5, which will go directly to the charity.

On Tuesday, October 19, at 4pm, members will meet at Charlie Bears in Launceston for a tour, previously postponed, followed by a cream tea.

Finally, Coads Green WI’s Alison Gribble and Pat Mallett will be giving a county Federation cookery demonstration in the village hall at Coads Green on Thursday, October 31, from 7pm to 9pm.
