West Briton Letters – October 8, 2009

As reported in The Cornishman/West Briton

THIS government hasn't created jobs; but it has created job losses.

However, this then allowed them to close a great number of our job centres – which created the loss of more jobs – while at the same time causing an increase in travelling for those looking for employment.

The media I listen to and read still paints a picture of record unemployment for Cornwall having an increase of over 100% in the last 12 months for unemployment benefits.  read more »

I LIKE to buy as much as I can from local suppliers | Derek Elliott Angarrack Hayle. | thisiscornwall.co.uk

Wednesday, August 05, 2009, 15:38

I LIKE to buy as much as I can from local suppliers; so you can imagine how I felt when in the Hayle Co-op I picked up a tin of Irish stew which stated 'made in the UK', but was followed by "using mutton from EU, Australia or New Zealand and EU Vegetables". Well, with 27 countries in the EU, plus Australia and New Zealand that must have been some tin of stew. It makes you wonder what its carbon footprint totalled and just how many people participated in obtaining its contents – any guesses remembering it was supposed to have been made in the UK?  read more »

...

I think it would be dangerous having it so close to the water and I don't know how they are going to stop cars going over the edge. Also you have got to think about the view from the houses in Penpol Terrace. They used to be able to see right out into the estuary and that is going to be lost. ING just want to grab as much money as they can and get out. They are rubbing people up the wrong way when they should be looking after us. We are the ones who make the decision.  read more »

Romeo: Wherefore were thou, Romeo? | thisiscornwall.co.uk

ROMEO, Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo?

That question was constantly asked by Colin and Sue Bailey after their beloved pet dog went missing.

Romeo, a year-old Shih Tzu, disappeared for 19 days after he and their two other dogs got out on to the main road outside their home in Fore Street, Praze.

Days went by and they put up 300 posters and distributed 400 leaflets around the area as they desperately searched for their pet.

There were sightings of him from Carnhell Green to Hayle, but nobody was able to catch him.  read more »

Angarrack Christmas Lights Switch On - Saturday 6th December 2008

After all the hard work in designing, creating, upgrading, building, configuring and funding the lights the switch on day finally arrived and the weather was kind - lovely clear skies - though that did make it rather chilly.

Many thanks to all in the village who helped make it all possible - including those who put up with being disrupted as the team worked so hard to setup all the lights and of course everyone from the hardworking Lights Committee.  read more »

Lights display among best | Western Morning News | December 14, 2000

THERE may only be 120 homes in the tiny village of Angarrack , near Hayle, but they certainly know how to put on a Christmas lights display to compete with the best of them.

On Saturday Sid Perry, one of the village¹s oldest residents, flicked the switch which transformed the small group of houses into a sea of colour with hundred and hundreds of lanterns and three large Christmas trees.

It is a real village effort with the decorations made by the men and the fundraising done by other members of the Christmas lights committee.  read more »
