Plans submitted for flagship Debenhams store in Hayle
Hundreds of residents support plans that will create over 500 new jobs
Plans for a new flagship Debenhams store and multimillion pound Shopping Park have been submitted to Cornwall Council. In addition to Debenhams, the scheme will include a further seven high street retailers with negotiations advanced with operators including H&M, TK Maxx, Mountain Warehouse and Outfit (which includes the brands Miss Selfridge, Oasis, Topshop and Warehouse, amongst others).
The application follows over 12 months of consultation with local people and key stakeholders. In September 2013, Cranford exhibited their proposals to local residents. Over 900 residents responded to this with 890 (94%) supporting the plans. Over 350 local people expressed interest in working at the new Shopping Park.
Bill Oakley, Chairman of Cranford Developments, who is promoting the scheme, said:
“We have had a fantastic response from local people and we have listened carefully to their suggestions. This scheme will bring over £30 million of investment to West Cornwall, providing hundreds of jobs and a boost for the local economy. The scheme will also bring many community benefits including an enhanced nature reserve and significant improvements to the A30.”
Gareth Dougherty, Acquisitions Manager from Debenhams added:
“We have been looking for a new store in West Cornwall for the last five years. We believe that this site meets our requirements perfectly and that a flagship Debenhams store in Hayle will offer much needed choice for our customers as well as employment opportunities and inward investment for the area as a whole.”
The scheme will generate significant benefits for the local area including:
- Over 500 new jobs for people living in West Cornwall.
- Investment in the surrounding road network with much-needed improvements to the A30 as well as new cycleways and pedestrian links.
- Greater choice of shopping for local residents. Replacement of the existing lorry park near Angarrack with new ponds and bird hide
- Long-term management of adjacent nature reserve and a dedicated green buffer between Angarrack and the proposed development.
- Extensive landscaping and tree planting.
Cranford has also adapted their plans in response to suggestions from the local community and key stakeholders. Changes include:
- Providing a pedestrian crossing over the A30 at ground level
- Providing speed calming measures on the approach to Angarrack
- Providing a dedicated ‘staff parking area’ with 82 spaces
- Increasing the amount of customer car parking.
- Improving the effectiveness of the Green Buffer through the use of a 3m high earth bund
- Improving pedestrian Links to West Cornwall Shopping Park
- Improving the designs of the frontages to the new stores Helping with future town centre management initiatives in Hayle.
If approved, they would hope to start work in Autumn 2014 with the retail stores set to open in Autumn 2015.
