Work under way for new spine road at North Quay

11 June 2020

An environmental initiative is under way to monitor and protect local wildlife as part of the latest phase in the regeneration of Hayle Harbour.

Environmentalists and ecologists are working alongside the construction team at the site of the North Quay development as preparations are made for a new spine road as part of the transformation of the area into an exciting and vibrant new coastal destination for West Cornwall.

The work in the Hilltop area of the site includes the clearance of scrub vegetation and will involve the ongoing monitoring and relocation of any reptiles on site, camera and daily monitoring to prevent disturbance to nearby badger setts and the prior inspection of all vegetation being removed to ensure it is not home to nesting birds.

The works are being carried out in accordance with the planning consent for the redevelopment of the site and under the supervision of environmental consultants The Environmental Dimension Partnership (EDP), who have prepared detailed operational plans to ensure all work is carried out sensitively and in accordance with environmental and wildlife legislation. This includes a detailed strategy to sensitively capture and move reptiles into surrounding dunes over the coming months and ensure that all nesting birds and badger setts are appropriately protected. The current vegetation is required to facilitate the reptile translocation works and is being adapted on a daily basis following prior checks by an ecologist in order to avoid active birds’ nests and badger setts.

Simon Wright, CEO of Corinthian Homes Group, said: “It is extremely important to us to deliver a project which enhances the local area and its economy while protecting and promoting its heritage and environment.

“We are pleased to be able to progress this latest phase of works on site and to be doing so in accordance with best practice and under the guidance and supervision of our expert environmental consultants.”

More than a decade in the planning, the regeneration of Hayle Harbour has long been seen as an important project in stimulating and sustaining economic growth in the town and West Cornwall.

Work got under way earlier this year on the scheme which will feature beautifully designed homes, new shops and open spaces, all set within a stunning waterside location just yards from the magnificent Hayle Towans Beaches.

The scheme, which is being developed by Corinthian Homes (part of the Corinthian Homes Group) and designed by internationally renowned architects and urban designers Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, has already won a shortlisting in the project category in the prestigious Housing Design Awards 2020.

Once complete, North Quay will become a focal point for further phases of the regeneration and a destination in its own right, for people living and working locally or enjoying a visit to Hayle, its near neighbour St Ives and wider West Cornwall.

North Quay is set amongst the striking scenery of the Hayle Estuary and within the boundaries of the Hayle Conservation Area and The UNESCO World Heritage Site for Cornwall and Devon.

It will feature approximately 140 properties over 11 buildings, including 17 three bedroom wharf style houses and one, two and three bedroom apartments, many with views over the Hayle estuary and beyond.

Phase 1 also includes the development of North Quay Square, which will host events all year round, and some 20 retail units for offices, shops and restaurants, creating a bustling café culture.

Public access to the beach will be maintained for all to enjoy and there will also be new car parking facilities at North Quay, a variety of attractive and well-connected pedestrian-friendly streets and seating areas incorporated into key locations along the wharf.
